As of Wednesday, there were 5,974 confirmed cases of the virus in China, 132 deaths, according to the National Health Commission (NHC).

The number of cases grew by nearly 1,500 from Tuesday, that’s over 30% growth.

Before that, from Sunday to Monday, the number of cases confirmed in China had jumped by 65%.

With the amount of verified cases rising day by day, the concern is growing over the worldwide spread of the virus. Various countries, including the US, have stepped up airport screenings and warned their citizens not to travel to China.

Some countries, such as Indonesia and the Philippines, have limited Chinese tourists.

Chinese authorities say they’re throwing everything they’ve to contain the disease within its boundaries.

Wuhan’s Communist Party chief Ma Guoqiang said in a press conference that the abrupt increase in confirmed cases is down to more effective testing steps.

Before January 14, all of the testing to the Wuhan coronavirus was performed from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, which was a “long process” Ma said.

To accelerate that process, from January 16 the Chinese central authorities allowed the Hubei provincial CDC to run the tests.

These samples are no longer needed to be sent to be analyzed at the provincial CDC, with a capacity of analyzing about 300 cases daily.

The speed of testing also increased from January 24, as nine hospitals can examine the samples, which radically increased our testing capability and efficiency.
